dealing with rounding and incorrect totals in pivot tables

Is Excel actually lacking a built-in solution for this, or am I just not aware of it?I have a pivot table showing summed $ values from my raw data.  The field in my pivot table is formatted to show…Continue

What could cause a pivot table Column Label filter to not be maintained?

I've created an SMI report with a pivot table in the spreadsheet, and set a field called YEAR to be a Column Label in the pivot table.  The values in YEAR are 2011, 2012, and B2012.  The column is…Continue

I am setting up a report using a Container that points to vdvBudgetAnalysis.  This SQL view does not contain any TranDate or PostDate data.  Instead, it contains FiscYear, FiscPer, and FiscYearPer…Continue

dealing with rounding and incorrect totals in pivot tables

Is Excel actually lacking a built-in solution for this, or am I just not aware of it?I have a pivot table showing summed $ values from my raw data.  The field in my pivot table is formatted to show no decimal places, i.e., values are displayed rounded to the nearest dollar.  The issue is that the total shown in the pivot table, which of course is also rounded to the nearest dollar, may not always match what you get if you add the rounded row values manually. It's easy to see how this is…See More

Hi Ralph, Can I ask you to confirm what range you use as the source of your pivot table? Is it by chance RawData or RawDataCols? I'd also ask if you would be so kind as to send a copy of the Excel file (with data) so that I can check it out…

What could cause a pivot table Column Label filter to not be maintain?

I've created an SMI report with a pivot table in the spreadsheet, and set a field called YEAR to be a Column Label in the pivot table.  The values in YEAR are 2011, 2012, and B2012.  The column is formatted as Text in the raw data.  I am setting a filter on the field to display only 2012 and B2012 data.  I then save the template, link it, close it, and rerun the SMI report.  The issue I'm seeing is that when the report runs, the filter has changed so that only 2012 data is shown.  I have to…See More

By the way, this actually can be done.  The trick is to create a new field that massages the FiscYearPer field to remove the dash and the spaces, so that it's simply "201103," for example.  Then SMI will be able to use that…

Thanks, Arthur.  That won't quite do it.  One problem with that approach is that you can't use an Excel expression as a Parameter in SMI.  Only actual fields from tables or views, or SQL expressions can be used as…

Hi Ralph, I'm not familiar with Sage, but Excel has a function that you can use to 'build' dates from the data you have. Assuming the FiscYearPer is in column C, see if the formula below…

filter report based on FiscYearPer field

I am setting up a report using a Container that points to vdvBudgetAnalysis.  This SQL view does not contain any TranDate or PostDate data.  Instead, it contains FiscYear, FiscPer, and FiscYearPer fields.  I don't need TranDate or PostDate data for my report, IF I can find a way to filter the report using these Fisc fields.  I want to include Parameters that will allow the user to select a time range of say, for example, Jan2010 through Jun2011.  Without TranDate or PostDate data, and without…See More

We have different environments since I am running SMI instead of SAI, and I'm running the client on a Terminal Server instead of Win7, but I have a hunch the solution I found might point you in the right direction.  Here is some text…

Sure.  Just drop the full 5 years of data into your spreadsheet, and then set up the yearly comparisons in a pivot table.  For example, depending on what your raw data looks like, maybe you could use your date field as a colum label and…

Actually, in this solution that I provided, the "+5)" should not be needed in the OFFSET function.  I think I needed it because of some quirk in my particular spreadsheet, but under normal circumstances it should not be needed. …

Ralph, a fantastic solution - thanks for sharing.   I would like to get the UNION add-in function working as it would be easier to use for those folk not familiar with VBA, like myslef. Will keep you all posted as to my progress.

So after including a macro that brings some additional static rows of data onto the worksheet that SMI is dumping data onto from the database, I needed a way to address the entirety of the data on Sheet1 when inserting a pivot table, including the…
